Summary:
Money is rarely just about money. Financial stress often carries deeper emotions tied to safety, identity, self-worth, attachment, power, and connection, yet many clinicians receive little training on how to navigate these conversations in therapy. This presentation explores how financial dynamics show up with both individuals and couples and offers practical, approachable ways to bring money conversations into the therapy room with greater confidence and curiosity. Drawing from a relational and emotionally focused lens, attendees will learn how clients’ early experiences, beliefs, and emotional patterns shape the way they think, feel, communicate, and behave around money. We will explore common financial dynamics seen in therapy, helpful questions to uncover underlying emotions and money narratives, and ways clinicians can create a safer space for clients to discuss financial stress without shame or avoidance. This presentation will also encourage clinicians to reflect on their own money stories and how personal beliefs or experiences around finances may influence the therapeutic process. Attendees will leave with practical tools, greater self-awareness, and increased confidence in addressing the emotional and relational side of money in clinical work. 1.5 CEUs.
