About this event

Summary:
The presentation will focus on the distinctions between bibliotherapy, journal therapy, and poetry therapy, highlighting how each approach can be used effectively in group therapy contexts. Attendees will learn how to create structured, supportive environments—referred to as “containers”—where clients can engage in therapeutic writing exercises. The presentation will delve into how poems can be found or created within therapeutic settings, integrating client-generated content into the therapeutic process. Clients might engage with existing works of poetry or create their own through guided prompts, blackout poems, or scrapbooking. The group therapy structure itself benefits from writing exercises, as the sessions typically follow a sequence of warm-up activities, main prompts centered on a poem or theme, and a cool-down phase that leaves participants with a sense of closure.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will learn the similarities and differences between bibliotherapy, journal therapy, and poetry therapy.
  • Attendees will be able to articulate how to create structure and container within journaling and poetry therapy sessions.
  • Attendees can identify next steps needed to learn more on the process of therapeutic writing techniques.

About the Speaker:
Tim Kelly, LCSW, is a therapist who's dedicated his career to learning more about journaling and poetry therapy and its therapeutic applications. He serves on the board of the National Association of Poetry Therapy and continues to run individual and group therapies, bringing his wholesome and creative techniques to help others heal from their pain.
