About this event

Summary:
The purpose of this presentation is to shed light on the often-overlooked issue of religious trauma within this community. This presentation aims to equip attendees with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide culturally sensitive therapeutic support to African American individuals and families grappling with religious trauma.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of religious trauma, including its definition, causes, and manifestations.
  • Recognize the cultural and religious contexts specific to African American families that may contribute to religious trauma.
  • Acquire practical therapeutic techniques and tips for addressing religious trauma within African American families.
  • Understand how to assist clients in deconstructing harmful religious beliefs and fostering self-exploration.
  • Analyze hypothetical case studies on religious trauma to apply the acquired knowledge and skills.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Alisha Powell is a licensed clinical social worker and educator, with over a decade of experience supporting individuals, couples, and clinicians in navigating connection, trauma, and sustainable professional growth. She holds a two degrees in Social Work, a post-graduate certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy, and a PhD, bringing both academic depth and real-world insight to her work.
