What is this?
"Advanced Directives and Advance Care Planning - Why YOU need to know", presentation by Kim Monheit, LSW
Description:
Health catastrophes know no age or gender boundaries. Everyone should have their wishes recorded for their protection and the protection of their families and loved ones. Come listen and engage experientially with Kim Monheit, LSW. Kim will simulate the process of filling out an advance directive with members. This particular directive, (originally created through the American Medical Association, and published by JAMA), Kim has been using with patients in a Primary Care Practice because it helps to educate patients about the difference between palliative and curative medical interventions. It also promotes discussion that is beneficial for anyone at any age to reflect what quality of life and goals of care mean to that individual person. This directive will be used following a scenario of a car accident. Each participant filling out their own directive will base their decisions about what medical interventions they may want or not want. After, each of 4 results of the car accident are revealed and a discussion/questions will ensue.
Kim will also briefly go over the current Colorado laws, along with the most frequently used Advanced Directives and Physician's Orders. A few powerful tools that apply to anyone living in the state of Colorado will help you advocate for your client's health care rights in a complex system.
Familiar Terms: MDPOA (Medical Durable Power of Attorney), MOST (Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment), DNR/DNI (Do Not Resuscitate/Do Not Intubate), The Five Wishes.
The 2017-2018 Salon Series is sponsored by Elements Behavioral Health
