Working Effectively with Enactments
Taught by Margy Stewart, Psy.D.

Description: The aim of this course is to help practitioners realize intersubjective influences which occur in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis and tolerate recognition of their own influences which contribute to enactments, stalemates and even ethical violations with patients. The 4 meetings of this course will consist of a small group of participants meeting for 2 hours. There will be one to two readings per session, which will be reviewed by Dr. Stewart and include active discussion with students.  Afterwards, clinical case material regarding enactments will be discussed in order to apply reading and discussion material. Students will be expected to bring case material.  We will follow guidelines for confidentiality.

Objectives: (after this class, participants should be able to):

  1. Discuss participant’s contributions to enactments when they occur with patients.

  2. Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate therapeutic interventions to improve therapeutic performance with patients with whom practitioners have been in enactments.

Biography: Margy Stewart, Psy.D. is a psychoanalyst/psychologist in private practice. She is on the faculty of the Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis and the current President of the Denver Psychoanalytic Society. She has taught many continuing education courses through the Society.
